46. That stupid M50 engine...

After a while, I started working on my project E36 again. The plan was to take the engine out of the green BMW, and to rebuild it trough the winter. There's nothing better than playing with your big, strong beemer engine in a nice, warm, cozy garage... :) (that sound's sick, right?) So, I bought an engine crane, a new air compressor, and some new pneumatic tools...

 Without the proper tools, taking out the engine is a real pain...
(remember how I took it out the first time? - Refresh your memory here!)

 

So, after a few hours, the engine was out, and in my  garage. Imediatley, I started to dissasemble it. And than, I found this:

 

Something isn't right here... I checked some engine specs (320 specification vs. 325 specification), and it hit me: My engine IS NOT a M50B25... it's a M50B20! Darn! I'm 40 hp short, to begin with...

The only good thing about this is, that I can aim even higher! So, I decided to buy a Double-Vanos M52TUB28 (or a Single-Vanos M52B28) engine. Come back to see if I managed to find a good engine! I'll write a bragging post the minute I buy one! ;)

25. Engine swap - Part 4

Finally, we managed to start the engine. It's still without a muffler, so it sounds like a V8 muscle car. And to tell the truth - I kind'a like the sound :) Here's a little video and a couple of photos:

Thank's to my friends, and my mehanic Miha, we finally managed to put the engine in. We had a little trouble aligning the engine, but hey... engine swap wouldn't be an engine swap without trouble. So, here's a photo proof:

I hope we'll start it today...

22. Engine swap - Part 2

So, we've managed to take the engine out of the red E36. And everything is going according to plans. We droped the engine, and we'll be putin' it on the green one in a couple of hours. Here's a couple of photos:

19. Engine swap

After a lot of thinkinkg, we finally decided how we're going to swap the engine from our red E36 to our 'new' green one. The idea is to drop the engine (with half of the suspention still attached), roll back the chasis, roll on the new chasis and bolt it on back, basicaly, without moving the engine. Here are a few pictures. I'll write a little DIY when we finish... We also started striping the interior of the green Beemeer.
